Hosting Bootcamp Review
As a university student I am always
keeping an eye out for possible ways to gain more knowledge and
experience in my chosen field as well as seeking contacts within the
industry. As a journalism student I am always eager to keep my foot in
the door of the highly contested media industry.
I was lucky to receive an email from
GRIT MEDIA, through RMITV, promoting a 'Hosting Bootcamp'. I looked
into it and was a little reluctant at first, because of the price.
Being a student, $200 seemed to be a lot of hours serving coffees. I
emailed my parents and they all thought I should go for it.
After a little more research I
discovered that Centrelink made me eligible for the discounted price of
50% off! Now there was nothing holding me back.
I was eager to learn and entered the
space with excitement and anticipation only to be greeted with the same
looks on everyone else's faces. We were al in this together and ready
for whatever journalistic challenge our 'leader' Naomi Davis could
throw at us. The group was small allowing us to move through things
quickly. We were all very supportive of each other knowing we'd in in
that position in a moments time.
I left the 'Hosting Bootcamp' with just
what I'd set out for and more. I had connections in the industry; I
have since found some volunteer work through GRIT MEDIA, to further
develop my skills; I gained a lot of very valuable skills; and I even
managed to walk away with a handful more friends.
A couple of weeks later when I was back
into the stress of university assignments I received a packet. I opened
the packet to see a CD that GRIT MEDIA had compiled of all of my work
through out the process of the 'Hosting Bootcamp' and compiled it onto
a very professional looking showreel. I now had a reminder of what I
was working for at universtiy and where I wanted to be. This showreel
will become me mode of accessing the media industry.

Scriptwriting Workshop 2009

GRIT MEDIA’s 2009 workshops have blasted
off into the stratosphere with flair! We have, taking some advice from
The Sound of Music, started our exploration into the different facets
of film and television production at the very beginning with, of
course, the script.
Under the instruction of Australian
screen writer Ian Dickson, GRIT MEDIA members were given the
opportunity to explore the ins and outs of penning the blueprint of a
feature film. From the creative to the structural, we learned how the
wordsmiths go about their craft.
Participants in the workshop included
aspiring playwrights Deb Humphris and Maree Ireland, currently working
on a project titled “Imperfect”, set to take the stage later this year.
The play will be written and performed by Wheel Women, a production
group comprised of women with disabilities, and will explore the social
issues surrounding pregnancy and mothers with disabilities.
The workshop was a huge success and
enjoyed by all who attended.
