THE BOLDNESS
The Boldness is a new initiative of Grit Media, a radio show that braodcasts on 3CR the first Wedneday of every month. The idea was simple, world domination via the airwaves. Bold topics, bold people, bold radio! Tune in to hear the fabulous hosts Macca and Jane discuss all manner of human rights with a disability bent. In the vein of BBCs Ouch, its funny, controversial and probably blasphemous too, what else can you expect from a bunch of cripples? The Boldness is a half-hour magazine style programme with hosts, crew and producers who have disabilities, from Jim the blind technician, to Michael the deaf presenter and the fabulously unstable Jane and Macca, it’s a seas of freaks who want to disturb you.
Background
The Boldness came about as a strategy for Grit Media to expand its operations into media beyond the television we were producing. After a number of public meetings and script submissions, a crew was appointed and hosts selected. The scripts were fine tuned and recorded along with new theme music from the fabulous Akash.
Philosophy
The title ‘The Boldness’ is a reflection on the ‘front’ often required by people with disabilities to get what they want, the Boldness required for those who campaign for human rights, the Boldness to demand what is rightly yours rather than waiting for someone to give it to you. Also a play on The Bold and Beautiful, it’s a pun that sets the tone for the show, humourous, controversial and always enlightening.
Aims and Objectives
We aim to impact positively on mainstream media with our storylines about people with disabilities and in the accurate reflection of our society and its 20% of people with disabilities. Currently mainstream and other media lack the presence of people with disabilities and where they are represented it is in a stereotypical way, usually ‘Super-crip’ (outstanding achievement in overcoming the drawback of a disability) or Tragic victim (horror stories and acquired disabilities). We show, and challenge other media to show, people with disabilities as proud, shameless, defiant, respected, denied members of society capable of great contribution to an inclusive society.
Podcast of 'The Boldness' will be available from this site from July 2008
